Zyprexa (Olanzapine)
Zyprexa is a best-selling antipsychotic drug used to treat a wide range of
disorders including bipolarism, manic depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and
other psychotic conditions.
While Zyprexa may be effective in helping people with these disorders, the drug has been linked to diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, pancreatitis and blood sugar disorders. The patients at greatest risk are people with diabetes or high blood sugar as Zyprexa seems to aggravate their disease. However, Zyprexa may also cause serious side effects in otherwise healthy patients.
In July 2002, a study at Duke University further showed a connection between Zyprexa and diabetes, however, Eli Lilly is faulted for not warning about these dangers on Zyprexa's label or product information. The company has been accused of heavily promoting Zyprexa as a safe and effective drug for psychotic disorders, while virtually concealing the risks from doctors and their patients.
In September of 2003, as a result of hundreds of reported complaints of hyperglycemia and diabetes seen in association with Zyprexa, the FDA finally ordered Eli Lilly to change its labeling to warn of such complications. See the Zyprexa press release regarding the FDA action.
Furthermore, a consensus statement was published recently, in the February of 2004 edition of Diabetes Care, a magazine published by the American Diabetes Association. This consensus statement by the American Diabetes Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity after input from all the drug companies, including Eli Lilly and after consultation with various experts and reviewing the medical literature, stated that "the data consistently show an increased risk for diabetes in patients treated with olanzapine [aka Zyprexa]."
