Accutane is an oral drug used for treatment of the most severe form of acne. Accutane is powerful enough to treat acne that can leave the patient permanently disfigured. However, Accutane may also have dramatic side effects.

The FDA warned physicians prescribing Accutane to be aware of any signs of depression in their patients. Accutane manufacturer, Hoffman-LaRoche failed to warn patients and healthcare professionals of the potential risks involved with Accutane until after the FDA made this advisement.

Since 1982, there have been 142 suicides associated with Accutane. The FDA has required that doctors and patients sign a lengthy consent form prior to beginning Accutane therapy acknowledging they have been informed of the dangers. The FDA's implementation of the consent form was due to the claims of Accutane patients that claimed they had suffered serious side effects that they were unaware of the risks involved with the medication when beginning treatment.

Some of the more serious side effects may include:

  • Suicidal ideation (suicidal thoughts), suicide attempts and suicide
  • Depression
  • Psychosis (including delusions and hallucinations)
  • Birth defects - including mental retardation and physical malformations - and fetal death
  • Intracranial hypertension

If you feel you or a loved one have experienced damaging side effects from using Accutane, call Jacoby & Meyers for a Los Angeles, San Diego or Southern California Accutane lawyer at 1-888-JACOBY-1 or email our accutane attorneys.
