Asbestosis is a chronic lung ailment caused by exposure to asbestos that can cause permanent lung damage or lung cancer. Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals that can be separated into fibers that are strong, durable and resistant to heat and fire. Asbestos fibers break apart easily and are most often inhaled or swallowed by victims. Asbestos has been used commonly in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant, but was banned by the EPA in many products. Today, asbestos can still be found in older homes, pipe and furnace insulation, shingles, millboard, textured paints, and floor tiles.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma may be diagnosed as many as 20-40 years after exposure to asbestos. For that reason, it is often difficult to trace how the victim was exposed to asbestos. This makes it even more important to retain an experienced mesothelioma attorney.

Silicosis

Silicosis is an incurable lung disease caused by inhalation of dust containing free crystalline silica. It is irreversible and progresses even when exposure stops. Extremely high exposures are associated with much shorter latency and more rapid disease progression.

Silicosis usually affects sandblasters, rock cutters, and miners where free crystalline silica dust (silicon dioxide) is inhaled by the workers. Medical treatment for silicosis is limited. Silicosis is usually diagnosed by a simple chest x-ray , revealing the presence of multiple small opacities on the film. Many lawsuits filed from people with silicosis claim that companies and manufacturers failed to warn of the dangers of the materials that cause silicosis.
