The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch is a device used for ventral or incisional hernias and is manufactured by Davol, Inc. In December 2005, the patch was recalled because the memory recoil ring can break and cause serious injury or death. The memory recoil ring is a feature of the patch that allows the surgeon to squeeze it down to a small size to fit the patch inside the surgical incision and then re-open in the desired area of the patient's intra-abdominal space. The patch is supposed to resume its original shape after being placed without any tears to it. However, multiple reports from surgeons to the FDA have indicated that the patches do indeed occasionally rip and/or tear when used as intended.

At the time of the recall in 2005, Davol, Inc. had received 24 reports of broken rings with the Kugel Mesh Patch. A malfunction of the patch can lead to chronic enteric fistulae (abnormal passageways between the intestines and organs) and bowel perforations.

By March 2006, Davol, Inc. had reports of 31 broken rings, 20 of which caused injury to the patient; one patient even died after developing septic shock and acute myocardial infarction caused by a broken ring.

Symptoms that could be indicative of more serious side effects from a defective Kugel Mesh Patch include: persistent abdominal pain, fever and tenderness around the implant site.
