New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Suing Paxil

Paxil (Paroxetine) was approved in the United States in December 1992 for the treatment of depression. It is a class of medicines called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Other SSRIs include Prozac and Zoloft. These drugs increase the activity of an important brain chemical called serotonin, a chemical known to be deficient in patients with manic-depressive disorder (MDD).

Paxil is manufactured by drug giant Glaxo SmithKline. Central nervous system drugs like Paxil are Glaxo SmithKline's biggest product group. As the ninth best selling drug in the country, Paxil has been approved for marketing in the US to treat depression, panic disorder, MDD, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

It is estimated that almost 17 million people worldwide have been treated with this antidepressant. Paxil has raised concerns recently because, although it has proven effective at treating obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders, it has also been associated with severe withdrawal symptoms in some patients who stop taking the drug. A recent study shows that Paxil can cause suicide and violence in children and teenagers.

Symptoms reported to the FDA have included:

  • Suicidal and homicidal tendencies
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Sensory effects
  • Excessive perspiration
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
