The FDA announced that Permax (generic pergolide) was being taken off the market on March 29, 2007, because of the link between Permax and heart valve damage. The announcement indicated that the manufacturer had voluntarily pulled Permax from the market. Permax was manufactured by Eli Lilly and was marketed by Valeant Pharmaceuticals. Generic forms of the drug were also sold in the U.S.

Permax has been used by an estimated 12,000 to 25,000 patients with Parkinson's Disease. Permax was prescribed to treat Parkinson's Disease (a progressive neurological disorder that affects the part of the brain that controls movement). Permax has been used since 1999 to treat restless leg syndrome (RLS) and tremors that Parkinson's patients experience.

In January 2007, two studies were published in the New England Journal of Medicine that indicated high rates of valve leakage in users of Permax: up to 23% in patients prescribed Permax.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was aware of the potential link between Permax and heart valve problems since 2002. In 2003, a warning about valvulopathy was added to Permax's label, and a "Dear Healthcare Provider" letter was sent to healthcare providers from Eli Lilly. In 2006, the warning was upgraded to a black box warning (a black box warning is a type of warning that appears on prescription drugs that may cause serious adverse effects).

As of March 29, 2007, Permax manufacturers have agreed to stop shipping Permax for distribution; however, a limited supply of the drug will remain available in pharmacies allowing time for healthcare professionals to discuss other treatment options and to change their patients' course of treatment.

If you or a loved one has suffered heart problems (including heart valve damage) after taking Permax (pergolide), you may have a Permax injury claim. Please email our Permax Lawyers in San Diego at the Law Offices Jacoby & Meyers for a free consultation or call us at 1-888-JACOBY-1.
