About Jacoby & Meyers,
Personal Injury Lawyers
Serving Los Angeles, San Diego and
Southern and Central California
The world of professional services was a very different place in 1972 when Steve Meyers (1942-1996) and I opened our first office in Van Nuys, California. Lawyers, doctors, accountants, architects, and other professionals, were not allowed to advertise their services. They weren't even allowed to publicly discuss their practices.
The lack of information meant most people didn't know which lawyers did what, or how to find a lawyer. The lack of open competition kept fees artificially high and gave lawyers little incentive to operate efficiently or at the convenience of their clients.
We thought this system was wrong. Everyone, not just the rich, needed to have access to personal injury lawyers and the legal system. This need was obvious. It was even reported in an American Bar Association study of the time that 70% of Americans who needed legal services were unable to find or afford a lawyer.
But filling the need required a revolution. The rules prohibiting professionals from talking about and advertising their services, and the mind-set that created them a hundred years ago, had to be changed. That started a battle, and national public debate, that ended five years later in the California and U.S. Supreme Courts. In addition, the way law was practiced and law offices were run had to be changed.
The rules fell, the changes were implemented and professional services around the world changed forever--and, as far as consumers are concerned, for the better.
By the early 1980's, Jacoby & Meyers had become the most recognized and one of the largest personal injury law firms in the country with more than 150 neighborhood offices and specialty units in six states and eight media markets.
These pioneering efforts generated a substantial amount of public interest and attention for Jacoby & Meyers.
