Trasylol (Aprotinin)

Trasylol is an aprotinin injection created by Bayer to prevent the loss of blood during serious heart surgeries like Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) surgery. The FDA approved aprotinin for use in 1993.

Unfortunately, a report in last month's New England Journal of Medicine on trasylol aprotinin injections have found that it doubles the risk of serious health problems like kidney failure and severely increases the risk of heart problems like heart attack, stroke, and heart failure in patients who have an trasylol aprotinin injection during their surgery.

Trasylol aprotinin injections are also being connected to a degenerative brain disease called encephalopathy. Symptoms of encephalopathy include loss of memory, loss of cognitive ability, personality changes, loss of consciousness, tremors, seizures, loss of concentration, dementia, and inability to speak.

Trasylol aprotinin injections have caused thousands of individuals to suffer from the effects of kidney failure, stroke, heart failure, encephalopathy, renal dysfunction, and myocardial infarction. In fact, the report stated that each year, more than 11,000 people are required to undergo kidney dialysis after their surgery as a result of trasylol aprotinin injections.

Trasylol aprotinin injections have been given to more than 1 million people during the 13 years they have been in use, and over 150,000 people were given the injection in 2005 alone.

Life threatening health risks are found more often in trasylol aprotinin injections than those found in the dangerous drug Vioxx, but since there have been fewer studies on trasylol aprotinin injections, the risks associated with the drug are just now being discovered.

At the moment, there are two alternatives to trasylol aprotinin injections that do not put patients at risk for any of the associated medical conditions. Tranexamic acid and aminocaproic acid are both generic drugs that prevent blood loss during serious heart surgeries.

It is important to contact a trasylol lawyer right away if you or a relative has been the victim of any of these health complications, risks, or side effects as a result of having a trasylol aprotinin injection during or after a surgery.
