Vioxx (Rofecoxib)

Vioxx (rofecoxib) was used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, to manage pain in adults and to treat menstrual pain. Vioxx was supposed to be a new and improved version of previous similar painkillers.

Vioxx has been prescribed to thousands of patients worldwide and was one of Merck & Company's most profitable drugs, accounting for approximately $2.5 Billion per year in sales.

There have been several studies over the last few years that have indicated a higher risk of negative side effects associated with the use of Vioxx as compared with other pain relief drugs. Following are just a few of the studies that indicated problems:

  • FDA / Kaiser Study - Over 26,000 Vioxx patient records and more than 40,000 Celebrex patient records were studied. Conclusion: Vioxx had a 50 percent greater chance of heart attacks and sudden cardiac death than patients taking Celebrex.
  • Merck Vioxx / Naproxen Comparative Study - 8,000 patients studied. Twice the number of Vioxx patients had heart attacks and strokes versus patients taking naproxen.
  • Cleveland Clinic Study - 2,600 patients studied. Patients using Vioxx over an 18-month period were at double the risk for heart attack and stroke.

Despite the obvious problems, Merck continued to minimize Vioxx's side effects until September 30, 2004 when they finally pulled it off the market. Unfortunately, during that period, Vioxx may have harmed many innocent people.
